Spotlight Drink: Jasper’s Coffee Grog
This ingenious creation was originally thought up by Leon’s Garage in Marysville, Ohio and brought to our attention by seasoned mixologist Jim “Hurricane” Hayward. The following recipe is based on the published ingredients, which we’ve calibrated to our own specification. The result is one of the most simple, intoxicatingly tasty, and original cocktails we’ve come across in recent times.
The inkling to combine Jasper’s Secret Mix and Don’s Mix together (in the same cocktail) is pure genius and we have to take our hats off to Leon’s Garage for being genuinely original in approach.
NOTE: The original recipe just calls for ‘Pusser’s rum’, however, we upped the ante by specifically using Pusser’s newly-released 109 proof Gunpowder Proof Rum and replaced the ‘strong Kona coffee’ component with 70 proof Kahlua Especial for a real kick in the pants. The latter is another one of our ‘secret weapons’ which features quite heavily in our repertoire.
• 1 oz Pusser’s® Gunpowder Proof Rum
• 1 oz Gold Puerto Rican Rum
• 1 oz Jasper’s Secret Mix*
• 1/4 oz Kahlua Especial
• 1/4 oz Don’s Mix*
Method: Flash-blend with 1 cup of crushed ice for 3-5 seconds. Add additional ice if needed. Garnish with multiple fresh mint sprigs and cinnamon stick. Pour unstrained into your favorite Tiki mug. Dust with nutmeg.
While only comprised of 5 ingredients, if you deconstruct the drink, it actually contains a whopping 9 ingredients and hits all the classic Tiki hallmarks beautifully. Deep, dark, rich and rewarding, this modern take on Tiki tradition is one mighty concoction that lingers long after the first sip.
*Jasper’s Secret Mix
• 16 oz Lime Juice
• 3 Cups of White Sugar
• 1.5 oz Angostura Bitters
• 1/2 A Whole Nutmeg, Grated
• Equal Parts (1:1) Grapefruit Juice and Cinnamon Syrup
